My wife took her laptop into the study and joked, “I have something urgent to handle, so try to keep your ‘little guy’ under control tonight, okay?” I laughed like I always did. But later that night, I accidentally overheard her whispering on the phone, “Sleeping with him makes me want to throw up, and I still have to pretend I’m satisfied.” Then she asked, “How much does he charge for one night? If my husband can’t do the job, then his money will.” I was hurt, but I forced myself to stay calm—until I heard her next request, and that was when I truly lost it…
For several seconds, I stood frozen in the hallway, one hand still resting on the brass doorknob of the study.
Outside, a late-night delivery truck rolled past the rows of HOA mailboxes on our quiet Columbus street. The small American flag above our neighbor’s porch shifted in the wind, and somewhere downstairs, the refrigerator hummed as if nothing inside our house had changed.
But everything had.
My wife, Lauren, was speaking so softly that I could barely hear her. At first, I thought I had misunderstood. Maybe she was repeating something another woman had said. Maybe this was some cruel joke between friends.
Then I heard her best friend Megan laugh through the speaker.
“You’re serious?” Megan asked. “You actually want me to contact him?”
Lauren lowered her voice.
“I wouldn’t be asking if I had another option.”
My chest tightened.
Only twenty minutes earlier, she had kissed my cheek, teased me, and carried her laptop into the study. I had smiled because that was what we did. We joked about everything—work, marriage, even the awkward parts of our private life.
I had never imagined she was laughing at me when I wasn’t in the room.
Megan hesitated.
“This could get complicated.”
“It won’t,” Lauren replied. “He never checks the accounts closely. And even if he notices the charge, I’ll tell him it was for work.”
I looked toward our bedroom at the end of the hall. My Buckeyes mug was still sitting on the nightstand beside the book I had planned to read. Our wedding photo hung above the dresser.
In it, Lauren was smiling at me as though I were the only person she would ever need.
Now she was discussing how to use my money to replace me.
I should have opened the door.
I should have demanded an explanation.
Instead, I stayed silent.
Because Megan suddenly asked, “Where do you want to meet him?”
There was a pause.
Then Lauren gave an answer that made my stomach turn.
“Not at a hotel.”
Megan stopped laughing.
“Lauren, you can’t be thinking about bringing him there.”
“I know exactly what I’m doing,” my wife said. “But before you arrange anything, I need you to ask him for one special favor.”
My fingers tightened around the doorknob.
“What favor?” Megan whispered.
Lauren took a slow breath and began to explain.
The first few words included my name.
And by the time I understood what she intended to make that stranger do, I realized this was no longer just betrayal—it was a plan that had already begun inside my own home.
I stepped closer to the door, but before Lauren finished the sentence, the hallway floorboard beneath my foot creaked.
The room went completely silent.
