My younger sister and I were going up the elevator when our neighbor’s golden retriever suddenly stared at her, came close and started barking loudly. A few seconds later, he raised his hind legs and placed them directly on her chest; We thought the dog was about to attack, but the reality turned out to be much worse
It’s been several years since then, but I still remember every little thing. The cold metal walls of the elevator, the dim light under the ceiling, my sister Lisa’s frightened face, and the strange look in the dog’s eyes, as if it had noticed something the rest of us hadn’t.
I was fourteen at the time, and my sister Lisa was only ten. After school, we almost always came home together because our parents worked late and asked me to look after her.
That day, Lisa was unusually quiet. Usually, she would nonstop tell me about school, friends, and teachers, but this time she just walked beside me.
We entered the entrance hall and called the elevator. When the doors opened, there was no one inside. We went in, pressed the button for the top floor, and stood by the further wall.
The doors were already closing, but just in the last moment, someone held their hand. A man in his thirties entered the elevator. A big golden retriever on a leash walked beside him.
The dog was calm and well-groomed. It sat next to the owner, and Lisa immediately looked at it with interest.
— How beautiful, — the sister said quietly.
The man slightly nodded.
— His name is Archie. He’s kind, you can’t be afraid.
The elevator started to rise. For the first few seconds everything was calm, but then Archie suddenly turned his head and looked at Lisa intently.
At first I thought the dog was interested in the smell of food from her backpack. However, Archie did not look away. He slowly rose, approached closer and began to sniff the air near his sister.
Lisa took a step back.
— Why is he looking at me like that? — she whispered.
The man pulled the leash.
— Archie, come to me.
But the dog did not obey.
She suddenly growled softly, and then barked sharply. The sound in the crowded elevator was so loud that Lisa screamed and leaned against the wall.
Archie raised his hind legs and put his front paws on her chest. The sister cried, and I rushed between her and the dog.
— Get him out! — I shouted. — He’s going to bite her now!
The man quickly pulled Archie back, but the dog continued to bark and tear at Lisa.
— Sorry, — the man said. — He never behaves like that for no reason.
And it was at this moment that something even more terrible happened, which I can’t forget even after years.
